Are you the type of person who stays calm and composed in the face of adversity? When life throws its toughest challenges at you, how do you react? Do you bend with the wind like a young sapling tree? Or do you break, like an ancient oak might?
Resilient people aren’t just survivors - they thrive in the face of adversity
At the core of a resilient person, is their mindset. They have prepared.
If you knew a storm was coming, you’d take careful measures to ensure your home was safe and secure. You would stock up with emergency supplies. You’d build personal resilience by strengthening your mental and emotional defenses.
Whether it's handling the inevitable storms of life or maintaining your health as you age, resilient people take steps to prepare and adapt.
If you’re feeling stuck or defeated lately, you might be wondering how resilient you really are. In this article, I’d like to explore with you a few key traits of resilient people and how you can cultivate them in your own life.
Ready?
1. How Reliable Is Your Support System?
If your answer is “I’m on solid ground!” Then you’re most of the way there already.
Resilient people know they don’t have to weather life’s storms alone. They make sure they have a network of trustworthy people around them, ones they can rely on. And they, in turn, are dependable for others.
If you find yourself lacking the kind of support you feel you would need in times of trouble, then perhaps it’s time to seek out like-minded people.
Find those individuals and surround yourself with those who uplift you and share your values. This will strengthen your resilience in the long run.
2. How Clear Are Your Goals?
If you have a strong sense of purpose, then you’ll have resilience in abundance. When you know what you want, and are willing to take risks to achieve it, you won’t be afraid to learn new skills, try new things, or even fail along the way.
With clear goals, you’ll stay focused on the bigger picture.
However, if you feel aimless, then it’s time to reassess. Without a purpose, direction, or goal, it can be easy to get lost in life’s challenges.
It’s time to take some time to reflect on what you truly want. Once you know, start taking small, achievable steps toward those goals. To help you clarify your purpose, I’ve created a set of daily prompts, to start your journey towards your goal. Go here, to find out more about Weekly Goals and Daily To-Do’s! 3. Do You Learn from Your Mistakes?
Take heart, mistakes are inevitable, but when you are resilient, you’ll look at them as valuable lessons.
Instead of dwelling on the failure or playing the blame game, resilient people take responsibility for their actions and use each setback as an opportunity to grow themselves.
If you find yourself stuck in a cycle of blaming others for your misfortune, it’s time to break free. A way to handle this is to:
Own your decisions
Reflect on what went wrong, and
Adjust your approach
Each mistake will bring you closer to making better choices - and help you bounce back more quickly next time.
4. How Do You Deal With Challenges?
Do you see challenges as insurmountable problems? As an obstacle to be annoyed by? Or, do you see them as opportunities for growth?
A mindset that sets on opportunities for growth is crucial to resilience.
If you’re always expecting the worst, it’s all too easy to feel stuck, discouraged, and defeated. But, if you work at shifting your perspective and begin to see challenges as chances to grow, learn, and improve, you’ll begin to find it easier to adapt and move forward.
A positive outlook doesn’t mean ignoring reality. It means choosing to see possibilities instead of just problems.
Conclusion
Do you remember that Billy Ocean song:
“When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”
That song was famous in 1985, when it was used as the soundtrack for the film “The Jewel In The Nile”. The saying was made popular in America by John F. Kennedy’s father, Joseph F. Kennedy. When he said it, he meant that
“When the situation becomes difficult, strong people are able to step-up and handle it!”
Resilience is a skill that allows anyone to step up and handle it. Resilience is normally strengthened in someone who has faced and dealt with challenges. So that means, anyone can build upon it, at any point in their life.
If you have struggled lately, take a step back and assess your resilience.
Are there areas where you could improve?
Do you need to work on seeking support, setting goals, learning from mistakes?
Could you do with shifting your perspective on challenges?
The good news is that resilience isn’t fixed.
Resilience is a quality you can cultivate and strengthen over time. By being proactive and intentional, you’ll be better prepared to handle whatever life throws your way—and not just survive but thrive.
